- The radio frequency vacuum dryer works like a giant microwave for removing excess moisture out of Timothy hay.
- The dryer consists of:
- a 40ft long cylindrical chamber with an inside diameter of 19ft having a convex door at each end
- a cart system to move the product in and out of the chamber
- two large vacuum pumps to draw down the chamber's pressure
- four 100kW solid state high frequency amplifiers with four matching networks and four load steering networks
- Benefits of RF/V drying:
- Low temperature drying - water boils at 40 degrees Celsius
- Fast and efficient when drying forage, lumber and other non-conducting products
- Closed cycle condensing steam
- Drying heats from the inside of the product outwards unlike radiation drying that heats from the outside of the product to the inside
- Drying does not depend on temperature gradient
- Vacuum lowers evaporation temperature of water molecules making it more energy efficient
- Both RF and Vacuum levels can be regulated to control drying rate
- Process:
- Load of product is moved into chamber using the cart system.
- Hydraulic doors are closed and vacuum is drawn.
- Once near perfect vacuum is drawn, the appropriate RF power for the product in the kiln is turned on.
