peace river timothy overview
since 1992, peace river timothy has operated a timothy hay growing, harvesting, baling, dehydrating/rf drying and double compression business in northern alberta, canada. prt specializes in growing timothy hay that is harvested, round baled, dehydrated
and turned into square bales/square baled in the field and dried. then the timothy hay is double compressed and loaded into ocean containers for export to asian markets such as japan. peace river timothy hay is
renowned in japan for its palatability.
canada ships approximately 50% of the timothy hay that is exported from north america. canada's proportion of north american forage exports to japan has been growing for many years. the bulk of canada's shipments originate in alberta.
northern alberta is blessed with ample rainfall, long sunny days and cool evenings. these conditions are ideal for growing timothy hay without irrigation but they are not ideal for harvesting the forage. in a large haying operation
such as peace river timothy inc. controls, several crews must be geared up to cut, bale and stack the forage in the july through august season. any rain, intermittent showers, cool weather, heavy dew, lack of wind, etc. causes major
disruption since the crews cannot start their harvesting until the product is dry enough to bale. if wet and humid conditions persist the windrows may have to be flipped several times to avoid rotting on the field. the solution
is to be able to cut, bale and stack the timothy hay with less concern for the moisture content. the challenge is to harvest the forage in a manner that efficiently yields quality product.
prt took this challenge and developed drying technologies that no other forage company in the world has begun to explore. prt is the only forage company to have designed and built these technologies for drying the timothy hay at their
plant in nampa, alberta. this allows prt to harvest the crop at a higher
moisture content and attractive visual attributes. this allows harvesting to continue in tougher moisture conditions with the knowledge that the forage can be dried and stored with highly marketable grades. since high grade northern alberta
long-fiber timothy hay is the most sought after product in the asian market, this forage will find a ready export market even if overall demand drops from existing levels. there are two technologies that prt operates which are a one of a kind single pass dehydration/drying unit to dry the long fiber timothy hay and turn it into double compressed bales and the other is a radio
frequency vacuum dryer to dry square baled timothy hay.
